History

FROM SLAUGHTERHOUSES TO PREMIER URBAN CULTURAL PARK

March 1974. The death of the last oxen on the site of the slaughterhouses of la Villette, built in 1867 by decision of Napoléon III, marks the end of an era.
In 1979, the Etablissement Public du Parc de la Villette is born and launches a grand project of rehabilitation and conversion of the 55 hectares of inactive industrial buildings with three precise missions in mind :

· to construct an architectural scheme of unique importance dedicated to music
· to establish a national museum on science and techniques
· to create an urban cultural park open to everyone

The international architectural competition launched by the Park in 1982, reunited 460 teams from 41 countries. Bernard Tschumi, the French architect of Swiss origin, took the prize in March 1983. His project answers la Villette's triple ambition- artistic, cultural and popular¡¦a meeting place for the past and future, Paris and it's suburbs, city and nature, art and science, mind and body¡¦

From the launch of construction in 1980 to the finished Park in 2000, here are the main stages that highlight the realization of the la Villette project :

· January 1984 Inauguration of the Zénith
· January 1985 Inauguration of the Grande Halle
· May 1985 Inauguration of the Géode
· March 1986 Inauguration of the Cité des sciences et de l'industrie
· October 1987 Inauguration of the first gardens of the Parc and la Maison de la Villette
· December 1990 Inauguration of the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris

· January 1995 Inauguration of the Cité de la musique and the concert hall
· January 1997 Inauguration of the Musée de la Musique
